The MOHFW projections

• Give total population for each state and country by sex (male/female) for each year till 2036 as well as percentage urban by each sex
• Give age-grouped and sex data for select states, excluding Goa, UTs. They combine NE states in one group (except Assam)
• The Age groups may not be of use to us directly and we may wish to use our own age groups

The UN Population projections :

• Give single age and sex wise population for entire country for each year till 2050
• Lack rural-urban and state wise data

My age groups of intertest were:

In order to arrive at Administrative zone wise estimate populations for 2024, for my age grousp of interest, I recently used the following methodology:

• Use the estimated sex-wise total population of each state in 2024 from MOHFW estimates [Table 1]
• The state data was aggregated into regions [Table 2]
• Data converted to wide format [Table 3]
• Use 2024 Indian Single year  Male Female Population  estimates  from UNPP . [Table 4] . The total estimated population of country was 1,450,935,808 . https://population.un.org/dataportal/data/indicators/47/locations/356/start/2024/end/2024/table/pivotbyage?df=fa176aa1-9640-412b-b4ac-5c8ffbeae127
• The population was aggregated into age-sex groups  [Table 5]
• The sex-wise zonal distribution from Table 3 were merged with each sex-age grouped total population [Table 6]

The Estimated population in each zone in each age-sex group of interest was estimated finally in Table 7
